A Shark trip including a visit to Seal Island, private Boulders Beach Penguin Colony, The Cape of Good Hope (Cape Point), and Chapman’s Peak guided tours.
Your full-day tour starts with a collection from your hotel in Cape Town or surrounds. The exact time will be confirmed via email the day before the trip.
The itinerary for the day will depend on the timing of your shark trip. The morning shark trip will follow with the afternoon land tour. If you have booked an afternoon shark trip, the land tour will be in the morning. The exact timing of the day will be communicated the day before via email.
Morning Shark Trip
The journey to the Southern Peninsula is just 45-55 minutes from the city center of Cape Town. Meet the crew at the Apex Shark Expeditions shop. Guests are welcomed aboard White Pointer II. A full safety and weather briefing is given before departure.
Possible shark species can include the bronze whaler shark and the seven gill-cow shark.
Whales, dolphins, and many species of sea birds are often encountered on this adventurous expedition. As we adopt an eco style of operating our trips, going to sea with Apex is like going on a safari game drive and we will try to take in as much marine wildlife as possible on our trips
Once we arrive we will decide on the best spot to weigh anchor and begin attracting sharks to the vessel.
The cage is then deployed where it floats next to our vessel. Once a shark approaches our boat, bait is kept in the water to keep the shark around long enough for identification, viewing, and cage diving purposes.
If the weather conditions are favorable, guests will be readied for cage diving. Safety precautions and operational procedures are then explained to guest’s wishing to enter the cage. The sharks come very close to the boat so it is not necessary to dive to see them. Those not wanting to dive will have excellent views of the sharks regardless. The shark trip duration is +- 3 hours depending on the weather conditions and shark activity.
There are many good restaurants in Simon’s Town to have lunch. Salty Sea Dog offers good old fish n’ chips and the Lighthouse Cafe serves up delicious one-of-a-kind dishes which you will want to come back for. Another excellent option is The Two Oceans Restaurant at Cape Point. Lunch is for your account.
BOULDERS BEACH PENGUIN COLONY
Five minutes outside of Simon’s Town, you will reach the Boulders Beach Penguin Colony – Home to the African Penguin. Experience these delightful birds up close in their habitat. The sandy, compact cove with large boulders, offers a home to waddling penguins & their nesting areas. It is one of the few sites where this vulnerable bird can be observed at close range, wandering freely in a protected natural environment. From just two breeding pairs in 1982, the penguin colony has grown to about 3,000 birds in recent years. This is partly due to the reduction in commercial pelagic trawling in False Bay which has increased the supply of small bait fish, which form part of the penguins’ diet. Bordered mainly by indigenous bush above the high-water mark on the one side, and the clear water of False Bay on the other, the area comprises several small sheltered bays, partially enclosed by granite boulders that are 540 million years old.
After that wind your way through the most beautiful scenery to Cape Point.
THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
Cape Point, a World Heritage Site, and protected Nature Reserve is the only place on the planet where one finds an area of vast natural beauty, world renown for its natural vegetation, and rich bio-diversity.
Part of the Cape of Good Hope is not the southern tip of Africa, despite lying at the southwest corner of the Cape Peninsula, just a little south of Cape Point on the southeast corner.
This part of the park is home to an array of Fynbos, over 250 species of birds, buck, baboons, and Cape Mountain zebra.
There are numerous picnic spots, paths on which one can set off on foot or mountain bike, and tidal pools on almost isolated beaches.
The area is of rich cultural and historical significance and includes monuments to early explorers such as Vasco da Gama and Bartolomeu Dias.
Chapman’s Peak
After a day filled of adventure and adrenaline, should the itinerary and weather allow, we will wind down on a spectacular sunset drive along Chapman’s Peak.
Located on the very edge of the coastline, the drive has simply breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean on the left and the overhanging green mountains on the right. The Pass first opened in 1922 and begins in Noordhoek, ending in Hout Bay. The 9 Km drive has 114 winding curves, with many lookout points to absorb the view and take photographs.
