Ceres Rail Company offers a magnificent return trip to the Elgin Railway Market aboard our historic passenger train. Our train is usually hauled by a heritage steam locomotive and a diesel, but at times, due to the fire risk and other events beyond our control, the trip may be hauled by two diesel locomotives.
The journey begins at 07h45 from the platform at Harbour Bridge Hotel and Suites, Dockrail Road, Foreshore, Cape Town. Once aboard you will enjoy a 3-hour rail experience to Elgin, traveling through the beautiful Cape, up the majestic Sir Lowrys Pass, and then down into the Elgin Valley. We have a fully licensed cash bar on board as well as a dining car providing coffee and other snacks. Various books and memorabilia are also available for purchase onboard. We also have a card machine to make life easier.
Our destination is the fabulous Art Deco & Art Nouveau inspired Elgin Railway Market (www.elginrailwaymarket.co.za) where you will spend a few hours at your leisure. At the market, whilst enjoying the live music, you can wander through the many stalls offering delicious food, a wide selection of local wines, ciders and gin. Various bespoke craft stalls selling a wide range of goods including jewellery, leather goods, wire art, etc are also on site. There is a wonderful play area outside for the children to enjoy too.
We depart from Elgin at 14h15 , arriving back Cape Town at approximately 18h00.

A really enjoyable and interesting experience. The. train was fabulous and the personnel friendly and helpful. The liquid breakfast was very agreeable! - Glen
A must-do experience! Such an old-word feel of charm and luxury and a unique way of experiencing the route. Highly recommended! - Liezl
Everything was good, well organised and on time. Train was clean and the steward was very attentive during the journey The locomotive engineers were very friendly and informative too. My only suggestion was perhaps to provide a welcome champagne/orange juice once we left the hotel. Also the choice of bubbly was very limited. - Carol
Would not be able to say how good this trip was for me as i would have to have more space than this. From the excellent staff to the great condition of the carriages to the great trip up the mountain and the time spent in Elgin. All a good experience and enjoyed talking to the staff at Elgin before we departed very informative about the train and crew A great trip back down the Sir Laury's pass and into Cape Town making good time into Cape Town. We stayed in a hotel on the station so a short walk for us. This time i missed out on being hauled by steam as Clare needed parts and all this was explained to me via a whats app message. Checking in was also fast. A big heads up to Jeremy the train manager for keeping us informed during the trip Sorry not to have met you. - Bruce
Had a really lovely day. Thought the fittings in the train and the train itself were wonderful. Enjoyed the scenery. A couple of long stops along the way there but believe these were outside the control of the Ceres Company. Jolly little market in Elgin. A very different experience and entertaining event. Have recommended it to others- ( including Capetonians who knew nothing about it !) - Laraine
